Get a Taste of Old English,

Albeit Slightly Modified

What on earth is a scealc?!

Scealc is an Old English (Anglo-Saxon) word that could refer to anything from a man or servant to a soldier or sailor, but for Alpengard purposes, it refers to any human (yet again, that means you!). It is pronounced as a one-and-a-half-syllable “shayalk”, since “sc” is an Old English consonant diphthong that is equivalent to the Modern English “sh” found in words like shout.

Meet the Alpengard Creator…

The author, architect and map designer of Alpengard, Phil Benson is an avid reader and gamer who has enjoyed fantasy literature and TTRPGs since he was a youngster. He had always wanted to develop his own TTRPG—Alpengard is the fulfillment of that dream and would not have become a reality without the assistance of the outstanding professionals featured below.

In gaming circles, the author is better known as Secg—pronounced sedge, as “cg” is an Old English consonant diphthong that is equivalent to the Modern English “dg” found in words like hedge.

Meet the Alpengard Contributors

Alpengard’s author had assistance from outstanding fantasy artists, designers and editors, for whom he is extremely grateful.
